Re-Grading

Yard Re-Grading for Foundation Water Protection

The slope of your yard plays a critical role in where rainwater and snowmelt go once they hit the ground. When the grade around your home slopes toward the foundation, rather than away from it, water naturally collects against the foundation walls, increases hydrostatic pressure, and finds every available crack and seam to enter through. Re-grading the soil around your home is often the most fundamental and cost-effective step in a waterproofing strategy. Keystone Foundation Repair provides professional re-grading services for homeowners and businesses across our service area.

Find Out If Your Grade Is the Problem

How Proper Grading Protects Your Foundation

The general standard for grading is a drop of at least 6 inches in the first 10 feet away from the foundation on all sides. When the grade falls short of this, due to soil settling, poor original construction, or landscaping changes, water accumulates at the foundation rather than running off.

Re-grading involves reshaping the soil around the perimeter of the home using fill dirt, topsoil, or a combination of materials to create the proper positive slope. In some cases, this may also involve rerouting downspout discharge, reshaping landscape beds, or addressing hardscaping features that contribute to improper drainage. The goal is simple: keep water moving away from your foundation, not toward it.

Re-Grading as Part of a Complete Waterproofing Plan

Re-grading is often a foundational first step in a comprehensive waterproofing plan. Before investing in interior drainage or exterior waterproofing, ensuring the yard is properly graded can significantly reduce the volume of water reaching the foundation, and in mild cases, resolve the water problem entirely.

Keystone Foundation Repair evaluates grading conditions as part of every free waterproofing inspection. We’ll identify where water is flowing, where it’s pooling, and whether re-grading alone or in combination with other solutions is the right approach for your property. When less work solves the problem, we say so.
