Core Fill/ Bar And Grout

Core Fill, Rebar & Grout Foundation Reinforcement

Hollow concrete block walls are a common foundation type throughout our region, and when those hollow cores are left unfilled, the walls have significantly less structural strength than their solid counterparts. Core fill with rebar and grout is a time-tested reinforcement technique that dramatically increases wall strength, resistance to lateral pressure, and overall structural integrity. Keystone Foundation Repair performs core fill and bar-and-grout reinforcement as a standalone service or in conjunction with other foundation repair methods.

What Is Core Fill with Rebar and Grout, and Why Does It Matter?

Standard concrete block (CMU) walls are manufactured with hollow cores that run vertically through each block. When these cores are left empty, the wall relies entirely on mortar joints and block material to resist soil pressure, which is often insufficient, especially in wet or expansive soil conditions.

Think your block wall is holding up just fine? The hollow cores inside might tell a different story.

Core fill reinforcement involves drilling access points or working from the top of the wall to insert vertical steel rebar into selected cores, then filling those cores with flowable grout. Once cured, the combination of steel and grout creates a series of reinforced columns within the wall, dramatically increasing its load-bearing and lateral resistance capacity. This process can be a preventative measure on aging block walls or a remedial repair following wall movement.

When Is Core Fill the Right Foundation Repair Solution?

Core fill with rebar and grout is particularly appropriate in the following scenarios:

  • Hollow block walls showing early signs of bowing or cracking
  • Older homes where block walls lack adequate original reinforcement
  • As a complement to carbon fiber straps or wall anchors to increase overall wall strength
  • Properties with high soil loads or poor drainage conditions
  • Pre-sale repairs to bring a foundation up to current standards

Keystone Foundation Repair will assess your wall’s current condition, block type, and soil environment to determine whether core fill is the appropriate, or most cost-effective, solution. We combine core fill with other methods when needed, always with the goal of giving your foundation the best possible long-term outcome.
